Innsbruck, Austria- Old Town & Tyrolean Evening with the Gundolf Family
In the summer of 2026 we spent one week in the Bavaria, Germany and the Austrian Alps, with two nights in Innsbruck, Austria.
This was our first time in the region. The city’s main tourism website was the best resource for our planning. Similar to Munich and Salzburg we found the easiest way to see all of the highlights was to purchase the Innsbruck Card for the 48 hours we were visiting the town. For $204 Euro total (2 adults, 1 teenager) we were able to use all public transportation and visited 8 of the 20 offered attractions with admission included in the card. It also included 20% off tickets to the iconic Tyrolean evening with the Gundolf family.

Old Town
Old Town Innsbruck is the center of activity, with museums, shopping, restaurants, and attractions. Our hotel, the Austria Trend Hotel Congress Innsbruck, was a 15-minute scenic walk along the river to Old Town, and we spent most of our time over the three days there.

Museums & Historic Sites of Old Town

Hofburg Innsbruck
The Innsbruck Palace was divided into two main sections; the modern-style Emperor Maximilian I exhibitions and the preserved historic Imperial residences. Admission was included with our Innsbruck Card, and the gardens surrounding the palace were free to the public.

The Golden Roof Museum
Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I put Innsbruck on the map in the 1490s. Much of the history of Old Town is devoted to his reign. We spent most of one morning exploring the museums of old Town, including The Golden Roof Museum, the Hofhaus, the Tyrolean Folk Museum, and the Hofkirche Church.

The Tyrolean Folk Art Museum & The Court Church
The final step to the Maximilian tour was our stop at the Tyrolean Folk Museum, which included access to the Hofkirche Church through a central outdoor courtyard. The Emperor designed a tomb, flanked by 12 statues of people he admired, both mythical and real. The tomb was completed 65 years after his death, but it was later confirmed that his body was never moved there.

The City Tower
The City Tower, built in 1450, is worth the 130+ stair climb for the panoramic views of Innsbruck and the surrounding Alps.

Cathedral of St. James
The Cathedral of St. James, built in the early 1700s, is still a central presence in Old Town. Visitation was free, with a small donation request for photography.

Experience Tyrol
With a teenager, Experience Tyrol was a great introduction to the city. In addition to being an immersive digital experience, it is also in the RathausGalerien, an American-style shopping mall.
Tyrolean Evening with the Gundolf Family

The Tyrolean Evenings with the Gundolf Family was the most traditional Austrian experience of our trip. There was an option to book dinner before or during the show, but we chose to purchase tickets for just the show (with a 20% discount compliments of our Innsbruck Card).
The show has been running since 1967. On the night we visited it lasted 2 hours with a short intermission. After the performances of traditional songs and dances, the family played the anthems of the countries represented by visitors in the audience, asking us to stand as our home country’s song played.
