Lincoln

Franconia Notch State Park, Lincoln, New Hampshire, 2023

Of our four trips to the White Mountains, this was our first time staying in Lincoln. Options for lodging ranged from motels to mid-size ski resorts. We opted for something in the middle, the Woodwards White Mountain Resort in Lincoln. Most rooms opened to the outdoors, motel-style, though some (like ours) had an interior hallway with the patio opening to the parking lot. The rooms were more updated than some parts of the outside, with amenities similar to a camping resort, including indoor/outdoor pools, a game room, and a volleyball court.

Staying in this section of the White Mountains allows easy access to scenic waterfalls at the Franconia Notch State Park, just a short 10-minute drive from the hotel. Short on time, we went on a quick and easy hike to see waterfalls along the Pemi trail. The hotel was also close to Flume Gorge Recreation Area, one of our favorite hikes in the White Mountains.

Kancamagus Scenic Byway, White Mountains, Lincoln, New Hampshire, 2023

From Lincoln driving east on Kancamagus Highway we found plenty of easy trails and places to climb on rocks and swim in the river.  This was our fourth year visiting the area since the summer of 2019.
On this trip we had just one day along the highway before we had to return to coastal Maine. We had time to hike the Lincoln Woods and Big Boulder areas for the first time and to visit our favorite areas, including Lower Falls Recreation Area.

Jackson & Bartlett

We left the scenic byway to go north toward Jackson, stopping for lunch at Eagle Mountain House. From there, we spent the rest of the afternoon rock hopping and wading in the water, first at at Jackson Falls, then returning to the Swift river and the Lower Falls Recreation Area.
