Virginia Road Trips: 4th of July on Chincoteague Island

Chincoteague Island, Eastern Shore of Virginia, July 2025

We spent two nights on Chincoteague Island for the 2025 Fourth of July weekend. There are two main centers of activity – the downtown waterfront and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The walkable two miles between the spots includes restaurants, shopping, hotels and historic sites. During tourist seasons the Pony Express shuttle runs, making it easier for visitors to navigate the island without having to find a limited parking spot.

The Refuge Inn

This was our third time in Chincoteague and we chose to stay outside of the central town at the Refuge Inn. One of the most unique amenities was the penned ponies onsite, and we spent a lot of time watching them from our room’s balcony and the platform overlooking both the pen and the wetlands. We walked downtown from the Inn and then took the Pony Express Trolley back from the fair grounds.

Museum of Chincoteauge Island

We were surprised to find most of the businesses and tourist sites in Chincoteague open on the holiday, including the Museum of Chincoteague Island. The charming little spot was filled with memorabilia and interpretation about the unique history of the island.

We learned that ponies Misty and her daughter Stormy, arguably the most famous Chincoteague residents popularized by the series of children’s novels by Marguerite Henry, had been preserved through taxidermy. They were part of an exhibit that highlighted their real-life history and their popularization through the novels and subsequent films. For Misty fans there was also an option to add on a visit to her home, the recently opened Beebe Ranch.

Downtown & The Carnival Grounds

The waterfront downtown offers hotels, shops and restaurants, and many were open on the holiday.

The Chincoteague Carnival Grounds are the central gathering spot for many celebrations, including the famous Chincoteague Pony Swim. The small town is set up to welcome large crowds, with school buses running to shuttle people from auxiliary parking lots.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fireman’s Carnival felt like a jump back into time, with carnival rides and games, rounds of bingo and raffles. People lined up along the road with chairs to watch the fireworks, but they were viewable from most the grounds.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

One of the benefits to the Refuge Inn’s location was proximity to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge . We could see the bridge leading to the entrance gate, giving us a good idea of when the crowds would arrive. At 10am the line hadn’t grown too long, so we were able to enter and park at the lots near two of the paved walking trails and at the main visitor center. We had considered a walk on the beach, but the line inside the park to find beach parking was at a near standstill by 11am.

Travel Tips for Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge:

  • When traveling with kids we found the off season to be the best time to visit Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. While we missed out on beach days, we avoided the crowds and mosquitoes that we found during July.
  • During one winter visit we also easily found the ponies along the Wildlife Loop Trail after it transitioned from a walking trail to a driving trail at 3pm.
  • The Herbert S. Bateman Visitor Center has interactive exhibits that explore the history and wildlife of the refuge. Staff and volunteers are available to make recommendations for park visitors based their specific interests and areas of seasonal interest.
