Coastal Maine- Pemaquid to Camden

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, Maine, 2023

Pemaquid

Pemaquid, Maine

Pemaquid Lighthouse is arguably the most photographable spot in Maine, with an easily walkable natural breakwater extending into the water past the lighthouse. We typically spend a long afternoon there, most of it spent climbing the rocks and visiting the small museum inside the lighthouse. On one visit, we were surprised and excited to spot a whale not far from the shoreline.

Rockland

During our first visit to Rockland in 2016 we focused almost entirely on art during a rainy afternoon, visiting both The Farnsworth Museum and the Maine Contemporary Art Center. In the summer of 2023 we returned to Rockland and had lunch at Park Street Grill, revisited the Farnsworth Museum, and took a long stroll to Breakwater Light.

Farnsworth Museum

The museum hosts rotating exhibits in addition to a permanent collection from American artists, with additional focus on Maine artists’ contributions. Works by the Wyeth family are the signature of Farnsworth.
With two buildings, we could have easily spent half a day in the Farnsworth museum. There is no cafe at the museum, but our ticket allowed reentry, so we were able to leave for afternoon coffee at the very popular Atlantic Baking Company.

Breakwater Light

We were thankful we saved our walk to Rockland Breakwater Light for a time when we didn’t have a small child in tow. The length of the walk and the gaps between the granite blocks required a lot of concentration and it would have been treacherous if it were raining. We stopped often along the 7/8 mile walk to watch sea birds. The interior of the lighthouse wasn’t open to the public, but the area around it had space for seating to enjoy the views from nearly a mile out into the harbor.

Camden

Camden’s active waterfront is a well-traveled tourist destination, with restaurants and gift shops. While there are small hotels and B&B options in Camden, we have always found overnight stays along the Penobscot Coast outside of town.
