Weekend Girls’ Getaway Destinations: Miami 2025

I’m not sure that we should still be using the term “girl” to describe a weekend away in our age bracket any longer. However, Miami Beach, a town known for its late-night parties, still worked out well as a destination for middle-age women who were looking for a mix of relaxation, culture and primarily day drinking.

Staying in Mid-Miami Beach

The Alexander Resort

We stayed at The Alexander, a large condo resort in mid-beach Miami. Condos are individually owned and vary in price and décor/amenities. While we weren’t within walking distance to the attractions of South Beach, the benefit of this location was direct access to a beach that provided resort services.

South Beach was four miles away. While rideshare services were quick and easy to book, traffic in the area was a drawback and it took nearly 30 minutes to reach our destinations.

Vizcaya

HEADING

The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens was an easy ½ day trip to the lush Coconut Grove neighborhood, south of downtown Miami. The large Tuscan Renaissance-inspired Villa and Gardens were built in 1914 as a seasonal residence for businessman James Deering, and now operates as a museum and event venue.

We had lunch (grab and go sandwiches, mimosas, coffee) in the Vizcaya Café. We would have opted to sit outside on a less drizzly day.   We spent an hour touring the house self-guided (There were tour options, but the interpretive signage in the house provided the right amount of info for first-time visitors.)

The skies cleared for us to walk through the gardens, and we were thankful to be there on an overcast winter day instead of in the summer heat and humidity.

Miami- South Beach

South Beach in the “off season” was still busy with traffic and pedestrians. We were there during Art Deco Weekend. Though we didn’t participate in any of the tours, it was nice to have a section of Ocean Drive shut down to car traffic, allowing time to stop and see the hotels and restaurants at night. We ended the night at the Swizzle Rum Bar and Drinkery, a small “speakeasy” style spot.

Our Sunday visit to South Beach was to attend the iconic Palace Bar’s Drag Brunch. The fixed Price menu included unlimited mimosas for the entire nearly 2-hour show.

Wynwood Arts District

I visited the Wynwood District twice over the long weekend. On Saturday night we walked through a few of the district’s small shops and had drinks and appetizers in the Wynwood Marketplace entertainment complex. Small food trucks, food kiosks and bars served food and drinks to the outdoor patio tables while other visitors roller skated in the rink behind the patio.

Wynwood Walls

On my last day in Miami, I took a solo trip to Wynwood to visit the Wynwood Walls Museum. The collection of street and graffiti art was displayed both outdoors on building walls and in sculpture gardens and in three indoor galleries. Guests were able to (after signing a waiver) participate in a graffiti-art experience also.

As with everything in southern Florida, timing and weather should play a big factor in deciding when to visit. There is little shade or air movement through the outdoor sections of the Wynwood Walls, and even on a winter morning I was thankful to have indoor galleries to break up the time taking in the murals.
